About the Number of Base Substitutions Between Humans and Common Chimpanzees
نویسنده
چکیده
Humans and chimpanzees are believed to have shared a common ancestor about 6 million years ago. Here using a new distance measure called the Jump distance, we calculate the number of base substitutions that might have occurred in the mitochondrial DNA during these 6 million years. Because of the rapid rate of changes, Mitochondrial DNA has got its own place in phylogenetic analysis. In the literature, different substitution rates for mitochondrial bases ranging roughly 0.025-0.26/Site/Myr (Parsons et. al. [1]), are taken for phylogenetic study. On the basis of different studies, it is believed that humans and chimpanzees were diverged from some common ancestor about 6 million years ago. Here we conduct a distance-based analysis to find the approximate number of mitochondrial base substitutions that might have occurred between these two species during a period of 6 million years. For this we assume an average base change rate of 0.15/Site/Myr.

Genomewide comparison of DNA sequences between humans and chimpanzees.
A total of 8,859 DNA sequences encompassing approximately 1.9 million base pairs of the chimpanzee genome were sequenced and compared to corresponding human DNA sequences. Although the average sequence difference is low (1.24%), the extent of changes is markedly different among sites and types of substitutions. Whereas approximately 15% of all CpG sites have experienced changes between humans a...
متن کاملImplications of natural selection in shaping 99.4% nonsynonymous DNA identity between humans and chimpanzees: enlarging genus Homo.
What do functionally important DNA sites, those scrutinized and shaped by natural selection, tell us about the place of humans in evolution? Here we compare approximately 90 kb of coding DNA nucleotide sequence from 97 human genes to their sequenced chimpanzee counterparts and to available sequenced gorilla, orangutan, and Old World monkey counterparts, and, on a more limited basis, to mouse. T...
متن کاملEstimation of the number of nucleotide substitutions in the control region of mitochondrial DNA in humans and chimpanzees.
Examining the pattern of nucleotide substitution for the control region of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in humans and chimpanzees, we developed a new mathematical method for estimating the number of transitional and transversional substitutions per site, as well as the total number of nucleotide substitutions. In this method, excess transitions, unequal nucleotide frequencies, and variation of sub...
متن کاملGene diversity patterns at 10 X-chromosomal loci in humans and chimpanzees.
We have investigated the pattern and extent of nucleotide diversity in 10 X-chromosomal genes where mutations are known to cause mental retardation in humans. For each gene, we sequenced the entire coding region from cDNA in humans, chimpanzees, and orangutans, as well as about 3 kb of genomic DNA in 20 humans sampled worldwide and in 10 chimpanzees representing two "subspecies." Overall nucleo...
